The Learner

To be an effective teacher in the year 2010 and beyond requires consideration of the teacher, the learner, learning and classroom processes. In this section we will discuss the learner.

"Knowledge of learners and learning is arguably the most important knowledge that teachers can have" (Eggen & Kauchak, 2001, p. 23).

An important aspect of being an effective teacher in the year 2010 and beyond is a knowledge of learners, which includes understanding how they construct knowledge; and how developmental, cultural, and other differences affect their learning. Effective teachers understand how an appropriate knowledge of learners can influence the way they teach.

"Knowledge of learners and learning is arguably the most important knowledge that teachers can have" (Eggen & Kauchak, 2001, p. 23).

According to Eggen & Kauchak (2009), knowledge of the learner involves an understanding of the following:

  • Cognitive Development
  • Personal, Social, and Moral Development
  • Learner Diversity
  •  Learners with Exceptionalities
